, unfortunately, that for literally years there's not been a head. the nra and gun lobbyists successfully even stopped the basic organization in charge of enforcement of our gun laws in america. >> when the late charlton heston would run that ad for the nra, he would wave some old musket near and say, from my cold dead hands, which i thought was awful to begin with, the absolute nature of that demand that they hold onto the gun, but he never waved an ak-47, never showed a 30-round clip in the air with a big banana. he never did that because people don't think of that as american revolution era. they think of that as state of the art mass killing. >> of course it is. and those are military weapons, military assault weapons. and, you know, thank goodness law enforcement turned up in newtown when it did or the list of children who had been killed and teachers would have been much, much longer. think about what happened in aurora, colorado. that man stood in front of a crowded theater spraying that audience with one of these assault weapons, and the only thing that stopped him emptying the 100 car

this afternoon, less than 24 hours, the nra will break its silence to address, quote, meaningful contributions to ensure mass shootings like the one in newtown never happens again but last night the host of the organization's web cast continued to be critical of any attempt at gun control including president obama's announcement of a brand new task force on gun violence headed by vp joe biden. >> when you look at the president, he mentioned, he's going to tackle this on all fronts but the majority of his press conference today was about guns. you can ban whatever you want. he'll find something else to get. if he can't get his hands on that, he'll find something else. >> in just the last hour, the vice president held his first meeting with the task force meeting with u.s. attorney general eric holder and law enforcement officials from around this country. ag holder will head to newtown later today to meet with first responders to the sandy hook massacre and three more victims will be laid to rest today. nguyen rals will be held for kathlyn hubbard, benjamin wheeler and ann marie murphy, a speci

the nra is listening. >> you can call it whatever you want to call it. >> congress hasn't confirmed the director of the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms. >> dysfunctional, dysfunctional, dysfunctional congress. >> we're not going to allow what has happened in the past to go on. >> congress has just three business days to pass legislation to avoid going over the fiscal curb. president obama has cut his hawaii vacation short and is on his way back to washington. the democratic senate will be in session tomorrow but the republicans are staying home. the republican aides tell nbc news that the house will not be in for business tomorrow. they released the statement calling on the senate to act first. senate majority leader harry reid quickly responded with a statement of his own. how else republicans pushed middle class families closer to the cliff by wasting an entire week with their incompetent plan b stunt. it is time for house republicans to put middle class families first by passing the senate's bill to protect 98% of americans from a tax hike on january 1st. the senate bill
vice president of the nra has now broken his silence. he says it's the good guys against the bad guys, and everyone should have a gun. i disagree. if you look today at the speech that we showed just earlier here on msnbc, it's the first time since the newtown mass murder that the nra has spoken out in a speech that brought out the protesters. >> see there? several protesters interrupting. the nra did not focus on regulating semiautomatic weapons in this address, an address i think can only be described as combative. wayne la pierre attacked the press, the game and movie industry, and unnamed politicians for basically getting this story wrong, and he issued a range of criticisms. he staked out his organization's solution to this problem. ultimately as more guns. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation. >> there you have it. the nra called on congress to fund armed guards at every school in the nation and
by the nra? >> well, i would imagine that there are members who are trying to get a 100% score from the nra, which is then used to campaign, raise money against a person who does not have the 100%. but i -- i really think that the overwhelming majority of americans are sane and they are interested in seeing that this at lee is minimized. this kind of mindless act is minimized. but look, as painful for me it is to say there are individuals no in congress who may believe it is time to ban assault weapons but who might not want to do it because they don't want the barrage of nra money and opposition coming in their direction. >> glad you said that congressman clear. i want to thank you for your concerned and your time. >> good to be one. >> thank you. >>> next up, new information on the mother of the gunman and the cache of weapons she kept in their house. for those with visions of doing this... ...this... ...and this, dancing in their heads... ...we have these. home depot gift cards. give the gift of doing, in-store or online. military families face, we understand. at usaa, we know military l

been associated with the nra and indicated their new openness to gun laws have not been the house republicans who would have to vote on a measure. i think it continues to be a very tough task in washington to get federal legislation through the house, that the president could sign on, and not impossible, but i just don't see the kind of movement and outrage that we have seen elsewhere reflected in that important body. now, we do have the nra having a press conference on friday, promising to propose measures. that could be very significant, if they did something, some significant movement that might encourage republican legislators to move on this as well. i think it is a tough battle and that's one reason the white house has been pretty gingerly -- moved gingerly in laying out exactly what it is the president is willing to do. >> lynn, as you know, jay carney said yesterday the president would actively support dianne feinstein's deal to ban assault weapons. he also used the phrase 16 times. how do you balance issues like this? you have the fiscal cliff, you have the new cabinet, t
a correction to make, earlier in the show when i said if you ask nra members that they believe if people have to pass a background check in this country before buying a firearm, i said 57% of members said yes to it. it is actually 74% of members who want a background check that want -- 74, not 57, sorry about that, we switched up our slides on that. here on nbc, our continuing coverage of the mass shooting, this massacre at sandy hook elementary school will continue now into the night. live from newtown, with chris jansing, please stay with us. >> reporter: 28 people dead in the nation's latest shooting massacre, but this time, the horror is at an elementary school. this is msnbc's live coverage of the shooting in newtown, connecticut. the first call for help came just after 9:30. >> the school shooting at an elementary school in fairfield county, connecticut. >> reporter: it is a small town, holiday lights are up everywhere. >> a young man wearing black. >> he entered the school, he was wearing all black. >> armed with at least two weapons, carrying two handguns and hundreds of rounds of amm
. >> a 25-year-old veteran might not have seen what was going on that day. tomorrow the nra will give its first news conference since the sandy hook tragedy and yesterday president obama made this personal plea at a powerful gun lobby group announcing his new task force to curb gun violence. >> the nra is an organization who has members that are mothers and fathers, and i would expect that they've been impacted by this, as well and hopefully they'll do some self-reflection. >> last night the host of the nra news webcast responded to the president. >> when you look at the president he mentioned he's going to tackle this on all fronts, but the majority of his press conference today was about guns. >> you can ban whatever you want. he'll find something else to get. if he can't get his hands on that, he'll find something else. >> joining me now arizona congressman ron barber and he was with gabi giffords when she was wounded in the tucson shootings last year. i appreciate it. >> i think in the become ground there's some carolling going there. some background music for this interview. the pres

representative ron paul of texas distanced himself on monday from the nra proposal to put more armed guards in our nation's schools and paul said on his website it's another kind of violence. how do you think this conversation can be had logically in the new year if that's the only option that the nra wants to put on the table as a meaningful solution? >> well, i think that tragedy we just heard about in new york is further evidence of the fact that criminals and mad men do pay attention to the gun laws. that man was not supposed to have access to guns yet he did. in response to your conversation you had with my friend jack kingston, we should not be complacent to go to schools to be assassinated ed but the fac we need to protect our children and guns in schools should be decided at the local level but the mad men and criminals, no amount of gun control and restricting access and tightening the gun laws will stop a criminal from doing what he intends to do but putting an armed guard in the school, local schools feel that's the thing to do, we need to protect our children and one way to do
a rating of "a" with the nra. >> everything has to be on the table and i think it will be. when you look at it, if dianne is saying assault weapons, i don't know anyone in the sporting or hunting arena that goes out with an assault rifle. i don't know anybody that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. >> does that sound to you like the beginning of some sort of change? because david gregory said that they reached out to all 31 pro-gun senators, none of them would come on the program. what chance does some kind of bill have? >> well, i think both the president's signal that he would do everything in his power was pretty striking and also the fact that you heard very little until today from the gun rights lobby signals both that this is going to be a political fight but it may not be as big of a political fight as it was or would have been after some of these others. i think the fact that innocent children were involved, were the victims here, really may have opened the nation's eyes to the need for some kind of stricter controls on, you know, on like the assault weapons ban. but what y
74% of nra members, in a frank month's poll, chris, said that they support the concept that no one can buy a gun without a background check. >> when you talk like this, they don't challenge it as much. they immediately go somewhere else and say how about trying some other approach? >> if people were armed, not just a police officer, but other school officials that were trained and chose to have a weapon, certainly there would have been an opportunity to stop aggressors coming into the schools. if a person like that was armed and trained, could they have stopped the carnage in the classroom? perhaps. >> okay. you know what a .38 special is. a retired cop or something walking around. that's what they're talking about. a school teacher doesn't know how to use a gun. pulls out your cap gun, revolver, and you're up against an ak-47. what are they talking about here? or are they saying school teachers should have ak-47s? >> could you imagine even if the governor were only talking about security guards, school security guards. could you imagine at an elementary school what his gun belt wo
virginia who said this on "morning joe." >> i'm a proud nra member and always have been, but we need to sit down and move this dialogue to a sensible, reasonable approach. when you look at it, diane saying that basically assault weapons. i don't know anyone in the sporting or hunting arena that goes out with an assault rifle. i don't know anybody that needs 30 rounds in a clip to go hunting. >> polls conducted over the weekend for the washington post-abc news found that 54% of the public support stricter gun control laws now. 43% oppose it. 52% support banning semiautomatic weapons, which automatically reload every time a trigger is pulled. 44% oppose that, and 59% support banning high capacity ammunition clips, meaning those containing more than ten bullets. only 38% oppose that. three weeks after dianne feinstein surprised the senate in 1993 by passing her amendment to ban assault weapons, dennis mccarthy was shot and killed on a long island railroad commuter train when a mass murderer opened fire on that train. six were killed. 19 were wounded, including dennis mccarthy's son, kelly. car
with me. >> on friday. the president of the nra said this. >> next week. we will be interested in talking about these. and contact us please at that point. we will be willing to talk to anyone on monday. he has been busy running around and spent some time today with cnn. joining me now, we are not afraid to discuss this with anything. the buyback has been something to be hold. and it has been really sat tur ration and the guns have been pouring in. it is a feeling that is different about it this time. this is happening in big cities in la. >> we are already sensitive to it and not in some of the more rural parts of the country. what i think is important is the sensation that is occurring throughout the country. it doesn't mean that it is prevent i preventing getting one of those guns. it is clearly happening out there. and karen the drudge report going crazy. jared loughner used ed handgun you couldn't write legislation that did not try to take that gun out of jared loughner's hand. we had a weapon that was used. i think he modified his ar 15 to be able to shoot more people faster but yea
. florida seem to have a special problem here. we have big following in florida with the nra i can see that. looking at their website you know, and everyone looks at florida as far as concealed weapon permits i think it has tripled over the last few years. i know the nra has over four million members. people want to bear arms. i upt stand that. people want to have concealed weapons now. when i say it is a problem not just the state of florida. i see that as a problem states are operating as individual countries. when you go to europe, you know, the size is around the same but you see each state size is a country in europe. we are operating like a country. each state if colorado wants marijuana then they get it. if florida wants to have guns. was i was growing up i noticed that the federal government stepped in more. the lawmakers were accountable. if you went too mar far in your state the federal government slapped you back a little bit. when president obama came into arizona he got a stern talking to. and he's a chief of the country and he has a finger in his face. we have to have the resp
